A week ago, Loriann Signori suggested
we all try to do a memory painting.
This is the one I sent to her.
I've never consciously tried a memory painting before, though I suppose that whenever I've painted without a sketch or photograph, with only an idea of a place or time which left an imprint, it could be called a memory painting. As it turns out, while trying to successfully render a likeness can sometimes be difficult, trying to not be specific can be a good idea. The ideal, of course, is for either process to inform the other.
On February 10th, Loriann generously posted paintings done by nine talented artists who accepted the challenge here.
I love how different they all are.

After posting a comment last night, I read Loriann Signori's blog posts. I was not familiar with this method of painting; I will try it one day. I don't think it will be easy.
Your painting is beautiful, and Loriann's is of a place--Lake Needwood--where I golfed and my kids fished and boaated. Small world.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Feedback is always welcome. This memory painting is a fun challenge. Go ahead, and trust your instincts. Seat-of-the-pants flying is a helluva way to access what you already know. I highly suggest that you give it a try.
this is nice and it illustrates that the memory doesn't have to be detailed or complicated.
Your painting is beautiful Sam. So powerful in its bold simple shapes with sensitve color. You KNOW I really like this one. What a success. All I can say is do more. Follow Whistler's guidelines and enjoy!
