down-payment on uppity

Some of you may have noticed that I was getting a little uppity about conquering the computer and this blog.  Well, shut my mouth!  Yesterday at about 5:30 when it was as dark as a pocket, I was walking the dog, and a car came around the corner.  To avoid becoming roadkill, we moved over to the side of the street.  Unfortunately (understatement), it was the icy side of the street.

Before you get to fill in the blanks, let me.  I did exactly what you're not supposed to do when you flip up into the air and gravity takes over.  I "broke" my fall with my right arm. That's right, my right (fore) arm.  Oh Sam, so wrong wrong wrong!

Skiers know about broken bones; we know about how it happens, when it happens, and why it happens.  We know the awful telltale signs of shock.  You'd think all that knowledge would help, but all it really does is deliver the bad news to you before anyone else.  At least you know when to sit and stay like a good dog.

Long story shorter...the interminable wait in the ER, the xrays (already had enough to glow in the dark), a splint, an appointment next week with my trusty osteopod (he designed and built me a new knee 7 years ago), and a no-doubt overdue downgrading of my hubris to humility.  Therefore, my blogging days must change.  I will be spending a lot more time reading your blogs, so take advantage of this captive audience.  I am here to learn; please impart wisdom.  In the meantime, I will be gazing longingly at my new full set of Unison pastels.  Sigh.

The dog is outside chewing on a bone.  How ironically thoughtless of him.

Oh no Sam!!!!!! I am so happy that you are OK, albeit a temporary condition (if you can call 7 weeks temporary:-{. Sorry about your accident!
Those Unisons are calling you like the monks. Let the paintings form in your brain and make notations, you will be raring to go in 7 weeks.
Take care Wild Thing.

Oh, dear! I'm so sorry about your fall, but so glad you're alright.

When you're feeling better, may I suggest some abstract art made with your left hand? I think you might be pleasantly surprised, especially if you still need pain meds...

I agree with Loriann. Those pastels are holding up signs for you.

No way am I gonna buy that you are uppity. Don't see it. Nuh, huh.

As for wisdom...hmmm Okay. I've got two quotes from The Artist's Way:
"Genuine beginnings begin within us, even when they are brought to our attention by external opportunities--William Bridges," and, "Whenever I have to choose between two evils, I always like to try the one I haven't tried before--Mae West."

"Irony is the hokey-pokey of a life lived sans souci." And you can quote me on that.
Not entirely sure what I mean by that, but I'm pretty sure I agree with it. Like, I believe in the magic that can happen when I stay out of my own way. Btw, regardless of which chandelier I may appear to be swinging from, the pain meds aren't worth the price of admission and are gonzo. This is just pure Sam. Yikes.

Loriann--having just read your post before the walk, I was probably mulling over Karen's value exercise when I bounced on my butt, etc., so yes, I'm already raring.

And Melinda--I passed by the pain in the ER by thinking of making some left-handed, right-brained trouble (reminds me of a tripped-out art prof in school). As for uppity, wasn't that Mae West's M.O.? And proud of it?

Thanks much to you both for the good thoughts and encouragement.

P.S. My cursor thinks my left hand is a real hoot!

Dear Sam,

May your grief be brief! Sort of a left handed way of saying I'm sorry for the break in your action.
Heal fast and firm, spend time talking to your Unisons and they will be ready to fulfill your every wish when you return.

Oh my god! You poor thing! Maybe you and Sanjay can commiserate now...? The worst part (aside from pain, cost, and aggravation) is that I'm guessing you won't be able to go swimming while in Hawaii? ...
Frankly, one of the best things about pastels is that they're kind of a "blunt instrument." I think left-handed pastel paintings from you will be perfectly wonderful.
Take care....
P.S. I'm a wee bit miffed that you bought yourself a coupla Helgesons, when you haven't yet bought yerself a Pfaff. (Hint: that Gubbio Roofs one you liked is still available...) Take care!

And I feel terrible for not even knowing... Here I've been sitting and stewing and feeling all pissy and poor - not reading others' blogs cause it made me feel sad ... and there you are with a BROKEN ARM!

I am so sorry - and I feel your pain, having had many broken bones in my life - and once even having my right hand "rebuilt" after removal of a benign tumor.

Ice is not a friend to us, unless it is in a glass. Heal, heal, heal.
